It also shows that he is not afraid to use the grenade. They use the backpack to show that he is prepared and ready. The hat is added because it suits the outfit.
The background is plain, but it has a black shade on the left and it fades on the right top corner to give that dull look. The effect they used was black and white because if they did add co ours in the photo, it wouldn't show a dramatic effect, it can cause the photo to look happy and brightened up.
His posture is straight and stiff to show some bravery.
In this photo, there technique is quiet effective for this type of theme. They somewhat showed stories behind this picture. I think that they did pretty well on the lighting and all.
