Photo analysis: What's the message?

In this blog I will be analyzing a photo of Matt Rigdway's magazine cover. I particularly chose this photo because the picture has tons of message behind the photo. In this photo, the author wants to contribute the feeling that Matt Ridgway is a tough guy that is willing to fight for the country.

The photographer capture his image slightly below and the image shows more on his left side of the face. They made the image slightly below to cast a shadow on his features and to show that we can look up to him. Furthermore, he was not having eye contact with the camera and the viewers to give the image of him being tough because when you face the camera, it give the illusion of you being sincere, not having an eye contact can also give the illusion of a more dramatic shot.
The lighting of this photo is at the top right corner, to show the shadow of his features. As you can see that they tried to avoid showing his eyes to give the picture some darkness and to show the sadness behind his stories of the past. Using that type of lighting showes a dramatic effect of the shot. That's how I mostly visualize this picture.
In this magazine, the proximity of the image is a medium shot so that it will show his wardrobe. Clothing is one of the important things to make the viewers visualize the theme better because the wardrobe shows the characteristic of the person. In this photo, he is wearing an army suit to show the bravery of the image.

The props they use in this magazines are a grenade, backpack and a hat. They use the grenade to show the bravery and how aggressive he can be to protect his country. It also shows that he is not afraid to use the grenade. They use the backpack to show that he is prepared and ready. The hat is added because it suits the outfit.
The background is plain, but it has a black shade on the left and it fades on the right top corner to give that dull look. The effect they used was black and white because if they did add co ours in the photo, it wouldn't show a dramatic effect, it can cause the photo to look happy and brightened up.
His posture is straight and stiff to show some bravery.

In this photo, there technique is quiet effective for this type of theme. They somewhat showed stories behind this picture. I think that they did pretty well on the lighting and all.
